Grafton Architects

Prominence

Stitching together volumetric spaces with the stature of robust materiality, Grafton architects present works that question our understanding of structure, permanence and drama.

Last month, it was announced that directors Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara are to be the curators of the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. Their unremitting presence in the architectural world can be seen in the numerous awards they have won, as well as their consistent lecturing across the globe. Their commitment to public lecturing at universities and design establishments illustrates their passion to exploring archetypes and investigating alternative approaches.

Sensing Spaces at the Royal Academy (2014)

Sensing Spaces exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London

Grafton Architects were asked, along with six other architectural practices, to take part in a spatial exhibition exploring our sensual connection within a space.

Enchanting arrangements of structure and light were combined to question our sensory experience. Suspended from the ceiling, the installation forces you to look up towards the light: outlining our natural relationship with structure, shadow and light.

University Luigi Bocconi, School of Economics

Named the World Building of the Year (WAF, 2008), the University Luigi Bocconi, School of Economics, in Milan offers a dip into the urban realm of a city.

At its entrance, the building’s footprint is set in, to allow a space of 18m x 90m into the public realm. Acting as a square or ingress, the stone texture that floods the floor, spills into the building. Here the connection of city and structure becomes fluid and, most of all, seemingly effortless.

Despite submerging beneath Milan’s urban context, the building represents it’s culture and weaves seamlessly into the city. The building houses conference halls, lecture theatres, courtyard areas and suspended offices. Robust angles of concrete divert our gaze towards the city.

Light filters down through spaces that appear carved into the stone of the city. Hidden fixtures and fittings mean that the sculpted stone architecture is showcased and dramatised.

Within the central medical school block, limestone is manipulated to respond to sun, wind and rain: settled, slanted and sculpted to create spaces of shelter for public activity.

Continuing the language of the existing accommodation buildings, the houses were built in brick. Depth and recession gives the impression of carved spaces. Addressing the exterior and interior public realm, the architects have combined feelings of solidarity and security with openness and invitations.
